The Bachelor of Applied Science in Sustainable Building Science was approved by the Washington State Board of Community and Technical Colleges and the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities in November of 2013. The program is also being supported by a significant National Science Foundation ATE grant. In June, 2016, South graduated the first cohort, and has now admitted the third cohort for the Fall 2016 entry. With the hybrid format, non-traditional adult students comprise the student body. They must have completed an Associate’s Degree to be admitted to the program and have a minimum of two years of related work experience. The average SBST student is 43 years old, has an Associate’s Degree plus at least one industry certification, and an average of ten years work experience in the built environment. South’s BAS in SBST program teaches you how to work with and in the new “smart” buildings and how to manage the people and resources you need to be successful in this arena. The focus is on sustainable practices for the 21st century, the most current and relevant methods for supporting the goals of the commercial building industry. When compared to a traditional bachelor’s degree, the Bachelor of Applied Science incorporates more hands-on learning and strong internship components. The program can also offer credit for prior learning and workplace experience, including industry credentials. Courses include; Building Science, Building Components, Energy Analysis and Auditing, Financing Energy Efficiency, Facilities Management, Lighting, Fiscal Management, Professional Communications, Building and Energy Codes, Automated Building Controls, Utilities Rates/Regulations, and Internships, a Capstone, and relevant general education courses such as Statistics.
